Soccer has wide participation at amateur and semi-professional levels, particularly among younger generations. Their top league, Major League Soccer, is continuously growing in popularity, and is now beginning to approach the NBA and NHL in terms of attendance levels. Major League Soccer (MLS) season runs from March to late October, with playoffs and championship in November. A number of international soccer stars have previously played for American teams, including Pele, George Best, Roberto Donadoni and more recently the greatest ever football player Lionel Messi.
The sport has shot up in popularity since the 1990s, and the country hosted the 1994 FIFA World Cup, the first time the event was held in the USA. The sport is continuing to growing in popularity, with many soccer-specific stadiums being built, and many American sports fans having a growing awareness of major international competitions, as well as the top European leagues.
